Description

In Act I scene iii of Macbeth, the witches gather and discuss their recent activities. The scene opens with them talking about what they have been doing since their last meeting. One witch recounts how she has been killing swine, another describes her encounter with a sailor’s wife who refused to share chestnuts, leading her to seek revenge on the sailor by causing a storm to wreck his ship. She shows her fellow witches a “pilot’s thumb,” which she says she obtained from the shipwreck.
