Description
Lady Macbeth’s assertion that “a little water clears us of this deed” is an attempt to reassure herself and Macbeth that they can easily absolve themselves of their crime. As the play progresses, it becomes clear that the psychological and moral implications of the murder cannot be washed away so easily. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are haunted by their guilt. Macbeth’s initial reaction, feeling that “all great Neptune’s ocean” cannot wash the blood from his hands.
